Zambia: Increasing Security of Land Tenure

WHFC

Maintaining secure tenure is essential to ensuring the full benefits of housing are realized – yet the majority of people do not have secure land rights. In Zambia, the government made land tenure a national priority with the 2014 National Land Titling Programme (NLTP). Because there is a lot of confusion about inheritance laws and procedures in relation to customary land, the government has pushed for using transitional occupancy licenses to make the process more flexible and affordable – but obtaining these licenses is still largely misunderstood.

In an effort to improve the security of land tenure, Habitat for Humanity Zambia connects land tenure to activities focused on issues like housing and sanitation and has formed savings groups and supports training. By raising awareness, increasing legal support, community-based participatory processes, and training to regularize land documentation, therefore increasing security and preventing eviction.
