Mexico: Renta Tu Casa

WHFC

Though many people are unable to access a decent and affordable home in Mexico, there are millions of homes that are empty because of a state-backed residential housing boom. Renta Tu Casa (Rent Your Home) is a program that attempts to reduce vacancies by leasing them to vulnerable people, with the municipality paying the majority of the rent. Renta Tu Casa will also renovate abandoned homes, paying half of the cost while deducting the other half of the cost from rent to the homeowner.

The project has been a success in its first three years, housing 265 people in 85 homes, along with 14 renovations. Renta Tu Casa aims to find solutions for 12,000 of the 17,000 empty homes in Tlajomulco de Zúñiga, which would improve neighborhoods, tenant security, and housing accessibility.
