Ecuador: Housing Subsidies for Vulnerable Populations

WHFC

Latin America is one of the urbanized developing regions of the world, and yet there remains a large housing deficit. In Ecuador, where a significant portion of the population lives in poverty, most available housing is unaffordable and therefore inaccessible. In an attempt to remedy the situation, the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing of Ecuador utilized financing from the IDB to launch their “Housing Solutions for Poor and Vulnerable Households” program.

This program has an inclusive approach, prioritizing women who are heads of households and living in poverty and families with people who have disabilities. The program grants partial or total housing subsidies for construction in rural areas, or home purchase in urban areas. By the end of 2021, the program delivered over 2,000 subsidies at the national level, and surveyed families displayed satisfaction with the program, which will continue to operate.
