Democratic Republic of Congo: Improving Land Administration

WHFC

Security of tenure is a concern in the DRC, especially for low-income farmers who lack formal land titles – therefore making them vulnerable to land grabs as Kinshasa expands. Effective land administration means that property rights are recorded and enforced, but in the DRC, there is an absence of land data that is required to produce land titles, and a lack of dialogue between local land stakeholders.

In an attempt to remedy this situation, the Drones for Land Clarification project has three major aims: to establish a space for participatory multi-stakeholder dialogue; to integrate new geographic information technologies into DRC’s land management systems; and to increase knowledge sharing on the benefits of land titles in inclusive development. While this project was funded outside of the government, it effectively built capacity in land administration and is focused on integrating successes into the national government’s land management instruments.
