Colombia: Rural Housing Policy

WHFC

Though still to recent to understand the full impacts, Colombia’s Ministry of Environment, Housing and Territorial Development designed a rural housing program of note in 2020. Política Pública de Vivienda Rural, or the Rural Housing Policy, provides clear tools, guidelines, and programs to effectively implement the right to decent housing for rural households. Provision for rural housing primarily comes through the Family Rural Housing Subsidy (SFVR), which allows a family to receive new construction housing that costs up to US$16,000.

By utilizing a targeted and differentiated subsidy line, an effective communication strategy, and access to technical support, the Rural Housing Policy aims to reduce both the qualitative and quantitative housing deficit in Colombia, reduce poverty, and improve quality of life.
